Speech Language Therapy is a therapeutic intervention that facilitates and supports overall development, specifically communication.
Communication is an essential aspect of interacting with others, and many of our students at Ruru Specialist School find communicating particularly challenging.
The Speech Language Therapist develops developmentally suitable communication goals with the students, staff and families.
Some students do not communicate verbally so other means of communication are taught, including the picture exchange communication system (PECS), signing and using assistive technology.
Other students may be particularly verbal yet need communication support with their social interactions.
We have an onsite Speech Language Therapist. She works with students regularly and provides both individual and consultative Speech Language therapy support.
