Speech Language Therapy is a therapeutic intervention that supports overall development, specifically communication.

At Ruru Specialist School we believe every student has a right to have their voice heard, valued and nurtured, no matter what form it may take.

We advocate a Total Communication Approach whereby a range of modalities are encouraged and supported including:

• Speech
• Vocalisation
• Facial expression
• Gesture / Makaton / Sign Language
• Symbols / Visuals
• Communication Books
• Low and high tech communication devices

Some students may come to us with many “tools” in their toolbox and others may come with only a few. The Speech Language Therapist works with students, whanau, and staff to expand and provide access to systems and supports that encourage language growth and expressive language skills.

We have 2 onsite Speech Language Therapists. They works across our base school and satellite classes and provide individual, group, and consultative Speech Language Therapy support.
